Every year I choose a word for the next year, rather than a resolution. This tradition is inspired by someone I still consider such an inspiration and role model, Lola Akinmade Åkerström.

Now, looking toward 2025, I want to step more fully into the spirit of conviviality—a word that can mean many things including collaboration, connection, and joy shared with others.

Why Conviviality?

The word itself stems from the Latin convivium, meaning a feast or banquet. At its heart, conviviality is about coming together, about sharing space, ideas, and nourishment in every sense of the word. It’s about being in the company of others—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Feasting on life in our togetherness!

This year, whether in my professional projects, my personal life, or my spiritual journey, I want to lean into the power of community.

What does conviviality look like in practice?

Working with others: This year, I want to focus on building projects and ideas with others, not in isolation. Collaboration brings fresh perspectives, unexpected solutions, and a kind of magic that can’t happen when we go it alone.

Creating space for joyful connection: Too often, life can feel like a relentless to-do list. Conviviality reminds us to pause, to celebrate, and to make room for the simple joys of sharing meals, stories, and laughter with others.

Fostering communities of care: I want to help create environments where people feel supported, included, and valued. This is a common thread across my varied work.

Learning from others: Conviviality isn’t just about sharing; it’s about listening. I want to be more intentional about learning from the wisdom and experiences of those around me.

As a person of faith I like to also think about how this word sits alongside my beliefs, this will be a key Bible verse for me:

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” – Hebrews 10:24-25

This passage feels deeply tied to the spirit of conviviality. It reminds me that connection is not a luxury or an afterthought; it’s a necessity. Something we should have in our intentions. We are meant to come together, to lift each other up, and to encourage one another toward a shared purpose.

So, as I step into 2025, I do so with a heart open to shared moments, shared efforts, and shared joy. I am grateful for the chance to embrace this word and all it represents.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. What word comes to mind for your own journey this year?
