The petrified oaks of Mundon, Essex
I discovered from someone else’s beautiful photo posted on Instagram that there is a forest of petrified oak trees just a 30 minute drive from my home! How strange you can go a lifetime not knowing that one of nature’s marvels is so close to home. It is believed the trees were originally planted in 1100, they are not actually fossilised and the cause of their demise is also not known. Many believe it was a result of a change in the water. The trees were haunting, but beautiful. I rarely shoot with black and white images in mind, but it seems to suit these trees.

Amazing moving work.
Amazing location for a free photoshoot – and the owner of the land & oaks is so welcoming, warm and friendly. Such a pleasesure shooting at the #OAKSMUNDON recommend it to all.
Hiya, I am aware that you mayh not spot this reply or be able to reply to it, but I am heading to a photography weekend in that part of the world this coming weekend and I only just spotted that the trees are on private land. Does the owner live nearby? Clearly I dont want to trespass, but I am not sure how I would secure permission? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks, Carl
Hi Carl, the trees are on private land but the land around them isn’t and you can get very close. The images I took were from the public land. I have no idea on the owner but you should be okay without even needing to trespass.
thank you!
best wishes,
